L-125  Principles of Lasers and Laser Safety

This two-day introductory level course is designed to give the participant with limited laser and optics background a solid introduction to lasers and safety concepts based upon ANSI Z136.1, FDA/CDRH, OSHA, and state requirements.

The course begins with a general overview of basic laser and optics concepts. The fundamentals of laser operation, laser terminology, and laser beam properties will be discussed, along with basic laser optics. Common types of lasers, including solid-state, gas, and diode lasers are described in this part of the course as well.

The student will then learn about the biological effects of laser radiation of various types and how this depends upon whether the laser is operated in CW, pulsed, or repetitively pulsed mode. Exposure limits are introduced including sample MPE, NHZ and OD calculations. The laser hazard classification concept is discussed, and an overview of laser accidents is presented.

The course concludes with a review of engineering, administrative and procedural controls needed for safe laser operation.

Course Topics:
  • Types of lasers and delivery systems
  • Laser terminology for CW, pulsed, and repetitively pulsed operation
  • Biological effects of laser radiation
  • The roles of ANSI, FDA/CDRH, and OSHA in laser safety
  • Laser hazard classes
  • Review of laser accidents
  • The role of the Laser Safety Officer in the laser safety program
  • Laser safety requirements for operation, maintenance and service
  • Overview of laser hazard evaluation, including the MPE, NHZ and minimum OD
  • Control measures: LSO, training, area warning signs, eyewear, beam stops, barriers and screens, interlocks, etc.
