Upcoming Laser Safety Training Courses

Developed and taught by the leading experts in the field, RLI training courses have been recognized as the best in the industry.

RLI also offers Online Industrial Laser Safety Courses and On-site Industrial Laser Safety Officer Courses that can be held at your facility.

For more information regarding our training courses, please contact a training representative via email or call us at (800) 94-LASER.

Our Signature Course:
L-222 Laser Safety Officer 4 Days
This intermediate level course provides an in-depth, analytical review of the LSO duties and requirements of ANSI Z136.1, OSHA, FDA-CDRH and state laser standards. After a review of the biological basis, the student will complete an in-depth computation workshop that covers MPE, AEL, NHZ and OD factors.

Course Dates:

  Feb 14 - 17, 2023   Video Teleconferencing
Apr 11 - 14, 2023   Plymouth, MI or Video Teleconferencing
  Jun 27 - 30, 2023   Raleigh-Durham, NC or Video Teleconferencing

Additional Courses:
L-113 Principles of Lasers 1 Day
This one-day introductory course is designed for those responsible for operating and maintaining laser systems, providing a solid introduction to lasers. It also provides a knowledge base for those who plan to continue their professional development and will be attending the Laser Safety Officer (LSO) course. In addition, the course benefits those who have management responsibility for lasers and/or laser safety.

Course Dates:

  Feb 13, 2023   Video Teleconferencing
Apr 10, 2023   Plymouth, MI or Video Teleconferencing

L-250 Principles of Lasers & Laser Safety Officer Course 5 Days

This five-day course is designed for those persons designated as the Laser Safety Officer (LSO) for their facility who also need a solid introduction to lasers.

The first day of the course provides a general overview of types of lasers and how laser light differs from that produced by the sun and other "ordinary" light sources. The participant also learns about laser operation, terminology and beam properties. Common types of lasers, including specific gas, solid-state, and diode lasers, are discussed and an overview of laser optics and beam delivery systems is included. The discussion of basic laser operation emphasizes those laser characteristics that are important for the LSO to understand in order to perform the laser hazard evaluation.

The next four days of the course consist of an in-depth, analytical presentation of the LSO’s duties and requirements according to ANSI Z136.1, OSHA, FDA-CDRH and state laser standards. After a review of the biological basis, the student will complete an in-depth computational workshop that covers MPEs, AELs, NHZs and ODs. An in-depth discussion of the control of laser hazards is provided.

Course Dates:

  Feb 13 - 17, 2023   Video Teleconferencing
Apr 10 - 14, 2023   Plymouth, MI or Video Teleconferencing
  Jun 26 - 30, 2023   Raleigh-Durham, NC or Video Teleconferencing

L-240 Measurements for Laser Safety 2 1/2 Days

This hands-on course will teach you how to perform laser safety measurements according to applicable laser safety standards. The course will focus on workshop exercises that are designed to make maximum use of laser output measurement equipment in solving real-world laser measurement problems.

Course Dates:

Jun 26 - 28, 2023 Raleigh-Durham, NC

Product Focus

Laser Barriers and Curtains

Ranging from standard freestanding units to custom curtain installations, RLI's Laz-R-Shroud barriers provide total protection against beams emitted and scattered from various laser sources. Laz-R-Shroud laser barriers are fabricated with tested materials that exhibit a high tolerance to incident laser beams of up to 300 W/cm2 for exposures up to 100 seconds.

Laz-R-Shroud protective laser barriers can be cleaned with mild soap and water.

RLI provides a complimentary barrier analysis tailored to your specifications with every quotation so you can be sure your barriers will do the job when it counts. We will supply testing data and rating information about the barrier material you plan to purchase. We provide our MSDS data sheet as well as a copy of our barrier labeling information. A 12"x12" material sample complete with label, seam, and stitching examples is also available upon request.

For more information regarding laser barriers and curtains, please contact George Gigous via email or by calling (800) 94-LASER.

RLI Testing Services

RLI provides laser safety testing and classification of laser, LED, UV and IR products and components to global laser/LED safety regulations.

Laser measurements are based on any of the following applicable standards:

  • Z136.1-2014 ANSI Standard "For Safe Use of Lasers"
  • FDA/CDRH Laser Product Performance Standard (21 CFR)
  • IEC 60825 series of standards

RLI will perform the necessary testing and radiation measurements required to determine classification and prepare the required CDRH and/or IEC 60825 reports. IEC 60825 reports can be used to support the “CE Mark” for the European marketplace.

Appropriate laser output measurements will be performed under normal operation and single component fault conditions for the purpose of radiation and product classification. Testing can be performed in our Laser Laboratory in Cary, North Carolina or on-site.

Measurement Capabilities

  • Power / Pulse Energy
  • Wavelength
  • Pulse Duration and Response Rate
  • Angular Subtense
  • Laser Beam Profiles
  • Near Field or Far Field Beam Divergence
  • Diameter of Focused Beams
  • Diameter of Gaussian Beams (1/e and 1/e²)
