RLI Exhibiting at the DOE LSO Workshop

The 2019 Department of Energy Laser Safety Officer Workshop is being held at the Commons Event Center, JJ Pickle Campus of the University of Texas at Austin, from March 31, 2020—April 2, 2020. RLI will be exhibiting at the event, which includes both invited and contributed talks.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Laser Safety Officer (LSO) Workshop is for individuals with responsibility for, or interest in, laser safety in a research or academic setting. This 2.5-day Workshop will include both invited and contributed talks on current laser applications, and associated laser safety issues and solutions. The final day of the Workshop serves as the official meeting of the DOE–Energy Facility Contractors Group (EFCOG) Laser Safety Task Group, and a discussion group meeting of the Academic and Medical Laser Safety Officer (AMLSO) user group. The Board of Laser Safety (BLS) is also offering its Certified LSO (CLSO) examination prior to the Workshop.

Certification Maintenance (CM) points and Continuing Education Credits (CEC) for Workshop participation will be determined at the conclusion of the Workshop. Previously, the BLS awarded 2.5 CM points, the American Academy of Health Physics awarded 20 CEC's, and the American Board of Industrial Hygiene awarded 16 hours of CM credit.

RLI Consultant Thomas Lieb Receives TC 76 Chair Extension

Thomas LiebRLI congratulates Thomas Lieb on his extension as Chair of IEC TC 76, Optical radiation safety and laser equipment. His term is now extended unitl June 30, 2023.

TC 76 prepares international standards for equipment (including systems) incorporating lasers (and light emitting diodes) or intended only for use with lasers, including those factors introduced by the use of lasers which are needed to characterize equipment and/or which are essential to safe use.

The scope includes the preparation of standards applying limits as determined by organizations such as ICNIRP and CIE, to human exposure to optical radiation (100 nm to 1 mm) from artificial sources.

Upcoming Laser Safety Training Courses

Developed and taught by the leading experts in the field, RLI training courses have been recognized as the best in the industry.

RLI also offers Online Industrial Laser Safety Courses and On-site Industrial Laser Safety Officer Courses that can be held at your facility.

Our Signature Course:
L-222 Laser Safety Officer 4 Days
This intermediate level course provides an in-depth, analytical review of the LSO duties and requirements of ANSI Z136.1, OSHA, FDA-CDRH and state laser standards. After a review of the biological basis, the student will complete an in-depth computation workshop that covers MPE, AEL, NHZ and OD factors.

Course Dates:

  Feb 25 - 28, 2020   Phoenix, AZ
  Apr 28 - May 01, 2020   Plymouth, MI
  Jun 16 - 19, 2020   Raleigh-Durham, NC
  Aug 18 - 21, 2020   Chicago (Evanston), IL

Additional Courses:
L-113 Principles of Lasers 1 Day
This one-day introductory course is designed for those responsible for operating and maintaining laser systems, providing a solid introduction to lasers. It also provides a knowledge base for those who plan to continue their professional development and will be attending the Laser Safety Officer (LSO) course. In addition, the course benefits those who have management responsibility for lasers and/or laser safety.

Course Dates:

  Feb 24, 2020   Phoenix, AZ

L-250 Principles of Lasers & Laser Safety Officer Course 5 Days

This five-day course is designed for those persons designated as the Laser Safety Officer (LSO) for their facility who also need a solid introduction to lasers.

The first day of the course provides a general overview of types of lasers and how laser light differs from that produced by the sun and other "ordinary" light sources. The participant also learns about laser operation, terminology and beam properties. Common types of lasers, including specific gas, solid-state, and diode lasers, are discussed and an overview of laser optics and beam delivery systems is included. The discussion of basic laser operation emphasizes those laser characteristics that are important for the LSO to understand in order to perform the laser hazard evaluation.

The next four days of the course consist of an in-depth, analytical presentation of the LSO’s duties and requirements according to ANSI Z136.1, OSHA, FDA-CDRH and state laser standards. After a review of the biological basis, the student will complete an in-depth computational workshop that covers MPEs, AELs, NHZs and ODs. An in-depth discussion of the control of laser hazards is provided.

Course Dates:

  Feb 24 - 28, 2020   Phoenix, AZ
  Apr 27 - May 01, 2020   Plymouth, MI
  Jun 15 - 19, 2020   Raleigh/Durham, NC
  Aug 17 - 21, 2020   Chicago (Evanston), IL

Laser Barriers and Curtains

Ranging from standard freestanding units to custom curtain installations, RLI's Laz-R-Shroud barriers provide total protection against beams emitted and scattered from various laser sources. Laz-R-Shroud laser barriers are fabricated with tested materials that exhibit a high tolerance to incident laser beams of up to 300 W/cm2 for exposures up to 100 seconds. Laz-R-Shroud protective laser barriers can be cleaned with mild soap and water.

RLI provides a complimentary barrier analysis tailored to your specifications with every quotation so you can be sure your barriers will do the job when it counts. We will supply testing data and rating information about the barrier material you plan to purchase. We provide our MSDS data sheet as well as a copy of our barrier labeling information. A 12"x12" material sample complete with label, seam, and stitching examples is also available upon request.

For more information regarding laser barriers and curtains, please contact George Gigous via email or by calling (800) 94-LASER.
