Last Chance to Register for August LSO Courses

Time is running out to register for our premier laser safety training courses, available for attendance through teleconferencing. These courses provide an in-depth, analytical review of the Laser Safety Officer (LSO) duties and requirements of ANSI Z136.1, OSHA, FDA-CDRH and state laser standards.

The courses being offered are:

Students will receive:

  • Course Notebook
  • Z136.1-2014 ANSI Standard "For the Safe Use of Lasers"
  • RLI User's Guide for Laser Safety
  • LAZAN™ Quick Calc Hazard Analysis Software (via download)

For students registering on or before August 7, 2020, RLI will ship the above training materials free of charge so they will be available at the start of the courses. Students registering on or after August 8, 2020 may incur additional shipping charges.

About the Laser Safety Officer Course:

The LSO course begins with a review of basic laser operation with emphasis on those laser characteristics that are important in understanding the laser hazard evaluation for the LSO. After a review of the biological basis, the student will complete an in-depth computation workshop that covers MPE, AEL, NHZ and OD factors. An in-depth discussion of the controls of laser hazards is included.

Options for on-site training programs will be presented including video examples and interactive video/computer programming. Medical surveillance testing will be discussed including examples of various tests. The course concludes with a session on non-beam hazards associated with laser use (i.e. fumes, shock, plume, etc.) with emphasis on industrial hygiene-based solutions.

About the Principles of Lasers Course:

If you are new to lasers or wish to take a refresher, our Principles of Lasers course is available the day before the LSO course, on June 15, 2020. This one-day introductory course is designed for those responsible for operating and maintaining laser systems, providing a solid introduction to lasers. It also provides a knowledge base for those who plan to continue their professional development and will be attending the Laser Safety Officer (LSO) course.

Meet the Instructors for This Event:

Robert C. Aldrich, LSS

Mr. Aldrich is an internationally recognized expert in Laser Safety and is currently a senior laser safety expert for the United States Navy. He is Chairman of the ANSI Z136.6 Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers Outdoors and a voting member of the ANSI Z136 ASC general committee and several other Standards subcommittees.

Mr. Aldrich is a United States Delegate and co-chair of the NATO Laser Safety Panel for the development of laser range guidance for Allied Forces associated with STANAG 3606. He has also contributed to the development of the IEC 60825 series of standards.

Laser Safety Awareness

This three module introductory level course provides an overview of laser safety for personnel in and around the working environment with enclosed high powered laser systems as well as low powered visible lasers.

Laser Safety Orientation

This introductory course covers laser safety requirements in the manufacturing environment. It is based on the ANSI Z-136.1(2014) Standard, as well as CDRH and OSHA. The course is designed for those who operate, service and maintain laser systems.

Laser Safety Orientation, IEC Edition

Based on the applicable EN and IEC Laser Safety Standards, this course will provide you with an understanding of the characteristics of laser light, the nature of laser hazards, and the meaning of the different laser classes. You will also learn about appropriate safety procedures, and recognize the importance of following them.

Laser Barriers and Curtains

Ranging from standard freestanding units to custom curtain installations, RLI's Laz-R-Shroud barriers provide total protection against beams emitted and scattered from various laser sources. Laz-R-Shroud laser barriers are fabricated with tested materials that exhibit a high tolerance to incident laser beams of up to 300 W/cm2 for exposures up to 100 seconds. Laz-R-Shroud protective laser barriers can be cleaned with mild soap and water.

RLI provides a complimentary barrier analysis tailored to your specifications with every quotation so you can be sure your barriers will do the job when it counts. We will supply testing data and rating information about the barrier material you plan to purchase. We provide our MSDS data sheet as well as a copy of our barrier labeling information. A 12"x12" material sample complete with label, seam, and stitching examples is also available upon request.

For more information regarding laser barriers and curtains, please contact George Gigous via email or by calling (800) 94-LASER.
