Online Laser Safety Courses - Medical

Earn ONA Approved Credits

Also Available on CD-ROM

Rockwell Laser Industries has teamed with the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences to bring you the latest in effective Medical Laser Safety training online and on CD-ROM. We are starting our medical online training program with two courses designed for those at an entry level in laser safety:

Lasers in Surgery and Medicine (1.4 ONA Approved Credits), in three modules, is the "short course" for all personnel working in a department where lasers are used. This course will prepare personnel to take appropriate precautions when entering the laser environment.

Course objectives for this course are:

  • Identify at least three essential components of all medical surgical laser systems

  • Identify at least two current uses of lasers in medicine and surgery

  • Identify at least two safety precautions necessary to protect yourself and your patient from the hazards associated with the use of medical surgical lasers

More Information

Laser Safety in Health Care Facilities (3.8 ONA Approved Credits), in eight modules, is a more comprehensive offering for those personnel who will participate directly in surgical laser procedures, and will have responsibility for implementing and enforcing appropriate safety standards.

Course objectives for this course are:

  • Identify at least three characteristics of laser light

  • Identify at least three components of all surgical laser systems

  • Identify at least three types of surgical laser systems

  • Identify at least three types of tissue reaction to laser therapy

  • Identify at least two lasers that utilize fiber optic delivery systems

  • Differentiate the actions of lasers operating in the visible to near-IR spectrum from those lasers operating in the mid to far-IR portion of the spectrum

  • Identify the laser safety standards of at least three regulatory agencies

  • Describe at least four types of safety control measures to be implemented within health care facilities

  • Identify the major components of a hospital laser safety program

  • Identity at least three duties of the laser safety officer

Both courses are accompanied by RLI's book, "Medical User's Guide to Laser Safety." For more information regarding the RLI Online Laser Safety Training, please contact us via email or call a course representative at 1-800-94-LASER.

Laser Safety in Health Care Facilities

This eight module introductory level course covers laser safety requirements in the most common type of laser environments. It is based upon the ANSI Z136.3 Standard along with relevant Federal (CDRH & OSHA) and State requirements. The course will provide an introduction to laser safety at an entry-level basis. The safety aspects will be applicable for those who operate, service and maintain lasers.

The basics of lasers will include an introduction to the basic types of laser systems currently used in medicine. Laser bioeffects will be discussed , and how various tissue interactions differ with a variety of medical surgical lasers. Additionally, discussion will center on the impact of certain laser wavelengths on defined laser hazards. Finally a comprehensive review of laser classifications, and hazards will be provided with detailed descriptions of the implementation of required safety standards.

  • Introduction (3 minutes)

  • Module 1: Basic Laser Science (25 minutes)

  • Module 2: Gas and Solid State Lasers (14 minutes)

  • Module 3: Fiber Optic, Diode and Liquid Dye Lasers (18 minutes)

  • Module 4: Tissue Interaction, Part 1 (16 minutes)

  • Module 5: Tissue Interaction, Part 2 (18 minutes)
