Laser Measurement and Testing

RLI Capabilities and Experience
Rockwell Laser Industries is an industry leader in laser safety. This includes knowledge and experience in the measurement aspects related to laser safety. Utilizing these abilities, RLI regularly assists clients with laser output measurements using RLI output measurement and beam analyzer systems to quantify the client's measurement requirements.

For more information regarding this service, please contact us via email or call a consulting representative at 1-800-94-LASER.

The ANSI Z136.1 STANDARD FOR SAFE USE OF LASERS, FDA/CDRH Laser Product Performance Standards and International (IEC 825) standards are the basis of the measurements. The measurement capabilities include:

  • Power, Pulse Energy

  • Pulse Duration and Response Rate

  • Laser Beam Profiles

  • Near Field or Far Field Beam Divergence

  • Diameter of Focused Beams

  • Diameter of Gaussian Beams (1/e and 1/e2)

  • Shapes: Elliptical, Rectangular, Others

  • Near Gaussian Beam Profiles with M2

Note that the specific method in making the measurements for the above items will be chosen for each measurement situation.

Qualified Testing for Third Party Certifications
RLI has been qualified by a major international testing laboratory as a subcontractor for the measurement of laser beams and the testing of laser products for conformity to international laser standards. Such measurements and testing are often required by manufacturers to meet all requirements for CE marketing of products for the European market.

Test Methods and Reference Sources
The measurements will be conducted following an overall assessment by RLI staff of the requirements for each client. All measurements shall be done using test procedures that are considered as accepted industry practice.

Where appropriate, the following documents will serve as a reference for the measurement procedure requirements:

  • RLI MEASUREMENT COURSE HANDBOOK, Editor: R. James Rockwell, Jr., Rockwell Laser Industries, (1995)

  • Draft International Standard: ISO/DIS 11146: Optics and Optical Instruments, ISO/TCI172/SC9 Standard for lasers and laser-related equipment-Test methods for laser beam parameters: Beam widths, divergence angle, and beam propagation factor

  • Draft American National Standard: ANSI Z136.4: American National Standard for Laser Safety Measurements & Instrumentation

  • David D. Royston, Robert J. Landry, Jerome E. Dennis, Dale L. Smith, Measurement and Analysis of Laser Radiation for Regulatory Purposes, in Proceedings of the International Laser Safety Conference, S.C. Charsan, editor., Publisher: Laser Institute of America, Orlando, FL, (7:45-60), 1991
