| RLI has extensive experience and capability in the auditing of laser products and facilities for compliance with applicable
laser safety standards. RLI routinely audits laser facilities and laser equipment used in facilities for compliance with the requirements of the ANSI Z136.1
Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers. Medical facilities are audited by RLI for compliance to the U.S. Federal Laser Product Performance Standard and other
applicable requirements of 21 CFR Subchapter J.

Major Audit Features
- Laser equipment safety features: protective housing interlocks, enclosures...etc.
- Personnel safety requirements: eyewear, clothing, gloves, ...etc.
- Beam delivery safety features
- Warning labels and other CDRH performance features
- Service and/or repair safety
- Review of laser area controls: including signs and other entryway controls
- Nominal hazard zone and eyewear optical density computations
- Laser generated fume, fire and explosion hazards
- Training requirements
- Confirmation of laser output measurements
- Special requirements in research and medical facilities
- Review of SOP's and laser usage requirements
In a typical laser safety audit, RLI representatives examine each laser system and each dedicated laser facility. Each of the
areas listed above are reviewed. A comprehensive summary of the audit's findings is reviewed by the RLI staff following the on-site audit. Then a
comprehensive audit summary report is provided to the client which includes specific recommendations.
ANSI Z136.1
Audits to ANSI Z136 include determination of the hazard class for the laser and the environment. A thorough process of hazard evaluation is used to
determine the Nominal Hazard Zone (NHZ) within the facility. Often this requires the use of physical measurements of laser beam parameters. Control measures
are reviewed and, when appropriate, additional control measures are recommended to the client. Laser safety administrative programs and safety training for
laser users are reviewed and recommendations for improvement are offered where appropriate.
"The LSO shall ensure that the safety features of the laser installation facilities and laser
equipment are audited periodically to assure proper operation"
